Writing your book blurb is not like writing your book.
Not even close.
Unless you understand a little bit about copywriting, your blurb is going to be just like everyone else’s – mediocre at best and make-you-want-to-gouge-your-eyes-out awful at worst. I suppose it could be worse, but you’d have to really try hard to make it worse.
Fortunately, your blurb probably isn’t that bad. Let’s face it, you’re not a traditional publishing company. You actually care about every detail of your book – and that includes marketing.
And that means running Amazon Ads.
If you’re running Amazon Ads, and you’re using that blurb of your the best you can, I’d wager you’re probably converting between 25-45 ad clicks into actual purchases.
That’s not great.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Writing blurbs is easy … when you know what to do. And having a high-quality, functioning blurb can mean the difference between 1 purchase every 30 clicks, and 1 purchase every 10 clicks. I probably don’t have to tell you this … but I will anyways
That’s a big deal!
That’s the difference between spending $30 per sale and spending $10 per sale. It’s also the difference of 2 sales per transaction. Before I go on, I should say that numbers like this get me really excited – in a nerdy, I love it when numbers work in my favor, sort of way.
Put it another way. If you are selling your book for $5.99 and it normally takes you 30 clicks to get a purchase … and you’re paying an average of $0.35 per click, and you take the Amazon commission of 30% out of your sale, your spending will look something like this:
STUFF THAT EXPLAINS ITSELF | 1:30 Sale | 1:10 Sales |
Average Clicks Per Sale | 30 | 10 |
Cost Per Click | $0.35 | $0.35 |
Ad Spend | $10.50 | $3.50 |
Price Of Book | $5.99 | 5.99 |
Amazon Commission (30%) | $1.78 | $1.78 |
Net Transaction | ($6.29) | $0.71 |
Let me help you out with this table.
The first number column represents a sale every 30 clicks and the second column represents a sale every 10 clicks. Now, when you are purchasing ad clicks at 35 cents a pop, you’re going to be looking at an ad spend of over $10 per sale if you’re only converting at 30 clicks a sale. After you take out the Amazon commission, you’re looking at a loss of $6.29 every time you sell a book.
But, if you look at the 1 sale in 10 clicks numbers, you’ll notice that you’re making $.71 per sale.
That’s a difference of $7!
PER SALE!!!
Let’s look at the table again. Only this time, I’m going to make the ad spend the same between the two of them.STUFF THAT EXPLAINS ITSELF | 1:30 Sales | 1:10 Sales |
Average Clicks Per Sale | 30 | 10 |
Cost Per Click | $0.35 | $0.35 |
Ad Spend | $10.50 | $10.50 |
Price Of Book | $5.99 | 5.99 |
Amazon Commission (30%) | $1.78 | $5.39 |
Net Transaction | ($6.29) | $2.08 |
In this case, I just kept the spend the same between the two columns. See the ad spend is $10.50 for both. But, since you’re now converting, because of a better blurb, at three times what you were doing before, you’ve now made a net profit of $2.08 in those three sales. Just imagine what that could look like if you’re able to do that for all your books.
Just imagine you had a vending machine, where all you had to do was put in $3.50 and it would give you back that $3.50, and then give you an additional $0.71 cents. Would you do that?
I know I would
Now, run that $3.50 transaction 100 times. 1000 times. It’s a sure-fire way to make your books profitable. All you need to do is make your blurb better.
That’s why I made this checklist. It will give you the basics you need to write a good blurb. And by basics, I’m talking about the bare essentials. It’s only two pages long, and the first page is just a title page … But I tell you what – it is worth it. Just look at those numbers one more time.
